An investigation by the Attorney General’s office found that when Comcast announced a $ 99 deal, it did not reveal to customers that equipment costs and mandatory monthly fees were not included in the price. The company also failed to tell customers that charges could increase while the customer was under a “locked-in” contract.

Those fees often increased the advertised price by up to 40 percent, according to Healey’s office.

Customers, realizing that the deal was not what they thought they had signed up for, would further face early cancellation fees of up to $ 240 even if they tried to upgrade to a larger plan. affordable, Healey’s office said.

Who will Comcast pay?

The company will reimburse Massachusetts customers who paid an early termination fee after downgrading their cable service or who were unintentionally disconnected by the company between January 2015 and March 2016.

The company will also forgive all overdue early termination fees and related late fees during the same period.

Customers don’t have to do anything to get refunds. According to the attorney general’s office, Comcast will provide refund checks to all affected customers and those checks are expected to be issued within the next 60 to 90 days.

In addition, the regulation requires Comcast to change its practices in the future so that customers are made aware of all disclosures before entering into long-term contracts.

The regulations are not the first of their kind for the cable company.

In 2016, Comcast agreed to pay a $ 2.3 million civil fine as part of a settlement with the federal government. It was the heaviest civil sanction ever imposed on a cable company.

The Federal Communications Commission said the fine was related to customers being charged for services and equipment they did not request or even refused. Services and equipment ranged from premium channels and set-top boxes to digital video recorders and other products.
